Hi, I'm Matt, the person behind Go to the Fells.

I am a writer, photographer, conservation worker, all round hill enthusiast. I enjoy nothing more than, a heinously early start to catch a sunrise or a long run in the hills like the human spaniel I am.

I am currently based in Kendal, working in publications for a conservation charity.

Conservation

After deciding as a youth that I disliked  the indoors, I chose to do a degree in Countryside Management in an effort to stave off the corporate world of fast cars, snappy suits and severe hairlines (as well as helping the environment of course...). From my degree, I developed an love of the environment and, in particular, talking to people about it in an effort to get them as enthused as I am.

Since graduating, I have worked for various conservation and land management organisations in a range of roles including practical management, community engagement, environmental education and, most recently, publications.

Fell exploits

A keen(ish) walker from a young age, I would spend many a sunny weekend up in the Lake District fells with my parents. Alas, and the reason for the aforementioned 'ish', I also spent many rainy weekend up in those same fells, staring at a panorama of cloud. After a grumpy teenage hiatus from hills, I regained my love of all things outdoors at about the age of 16, storming up fells in a diehard attempt to climb all the Wainwrights before if left for uni. Fast forward a few years, and I am standing on my final fell with a burning question in my mind: "what next". After a few attempts at cycling and swimming, I finally settled for fell running. A decision I count as simultaneously the worst and the best I have ever made.

After attacking fell running with all the gung-ho of an eager 22 year-old, I realised that, should I not want to be injured all the time, I should maybe take it a bit more easy. From then on, I have run sedately over the fells with a focus on enjoyment and 'taking it all in' rather than speed.

Photography

During one of my many running related injuries, which involved both breaking a toe and tearing my ankle, I took up landscape photography, a passion shared with my dad. A colossal juxtaposition from fell running, it taught me to properly look at landscapes and see the fells as more than things to run over. While it has been more of a hobby than anything else, my photography has been displayed as part of the Running Int' Fells exhibition and on the front cover for the Armitt Galleries What's n guide.

You can see my favourite images in gallery here or, for something more dynamic, you can watch timelapses from the fells here. You can also shop my prints here.

Writing

As well of running on and taking pictures of the fells, I also enjoy writing about them, having written for The Fellrunner, Running Int' Fells and UK Hillwalking (see below). If you are interested in working with me on a copywriting project, you can get in touch here.

All that is left now is to say I hope you enjoy this site, and I hope it inspires your next Lake District adventure.
